Phonics
At The Grove we use Little Wandle as our phonics scheme.
This helps your children to learn the sounds in words and helps them to read. We start learning phonics in Reception looking at Phase 2, moving on to Phase 3 and 4. We then continue our phonics in Year 1, where we look at Phase 5 and at the end of the year we have the Phonic Screening, which tests your child’s phonic knowledge.
Phonics is taught daily and your child is assessed each term, so that we can keep a close eye on their progress. We also have interventions in place for children who may find this a bit tricky, where we offer extra support to help them learn the sounds at a slower pace.
Below we have listed some links from the Little Wandle website to help you understand how the sounds are taught and for you to practice with your child at home. This includes:

And…How tricky words, alien words and blending are taught: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
As part of our Phonics scheme, we also incorporate reading. As we all know reading is a fundamental skill to enable us to reach out and improve our learning in all areas such as English, Science, History and Geography etc. At The Grove, reading is at the heart of our curriculum and phonics is incorporated within this.
Your child will be reading a phonic matched book in school and this will also be sent out to you on the ebook website for Little Wandle/ Harper Collins, which you will have a login for. We will also provide your child with a phonic book that is slightly higher to give them a challenge and a book for pleasure.

Any questions then please talk to your class teacher, and they will be more than happy to assist.
