Year 1/2

Year 1/2 – Spring 2 Curriculum Information

We are kicking off the second part of the spring term by making some delicious pancakes, to celebrate pancake day. We are going to be looking at the story called ‘Mr Wolf’s pancakes’ by Jan Fearnly. This story links nicely into our topic ‘Animal Antics’. We will be moving on to a range of ‘twisted fairytale’ stories and exploring a range of characters who have been perceived as ‘bad’ and looking at both sides of the story.

On book we will be focusing on is ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.’ We are going to be thinking about Mr Wolf and how he feels and if he really is bad. Here we will explore our school values of curiosity, respect and tolerance.

As this book is also about animals we are going to be exploring animals in Science. We will be discovering how to classify animals and looking at what animals eat. We are also going to be exploring animal habitats and animal babies. This will be supported by the books ‘The Gruffalo and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child.’ We are going to be thinking about where the Gruffalo fits in these groups. We are also going to be designing our very own animal and classifying it.

In Art we will be carrying out an artist study on the famous artist Henry Rousseau. Within this, we will be discussing his pictures, exploring colour and practising a range of art skills. We will be creating a painting in the style of this artist, using the animal that we have created.

We have many more things planned this half-term, which we can’t wait to share with you!
