Year 1/2 - Thomas Barnardo Class

Year 1 and 2 Summer 2 Curriculum Information

 

In Summer 2, we will be exploring Under the Sea.  We will be reading many books – Sharing a shell by Julia Donaldson, Tiddler by Julia Donaldson, Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins, Pinocchio and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles, these books are all about things which live in the sea and have adventures! In the classroom we will be using these texts to write our own stories, recounts, postcard writing and poems.  We are always trying to include our school values in everything we do.  This term we will be trying to provide learning experiences in and out the classroom environment to improve our independence, communication, and acceptance of each other and more …   

 

Also, in the classroom we will be continuing to focus on our wellbeing and relationships as a whole school on Monday afternoons. These sessions will help us build confidence, resilience, and relationships with each other. In History we will also be talking about Christopher Columbus and his life and the places he discovered.  Please talk to your child about the world around us, and maybe visit the public library together to borrow one of the books we are reading.

We love numbers and one of our aims is to continue learning about place value, multiplication and we will also look at time in this term. In addition to this, we will be problem sloving and explaining together.  Can you ask your child simple questions about any of these things ? Please use ttrockstars to encourage your child with their timestables.  They are set so the children can work on the 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s timestable. 

 

Our topic is called Under the Sea. In Science this term our topic about plants continues and we will be investigating growth, identifying, and naming common plants and much more.  We hope to grow lots of things in our outdoor environment this term. We will continue to use our observational skills to record the weather patterns. Throughout our learning in this topic, we will be trying to answer our Big Question, which is:  What lives under the sea?  In Art, Design and Technology we aim to make and design collage fish and sea creatures and make puppets to help us in our English writing. In R.E this term we are learning about ‘What it means to belong to a faith community’. We will also be talking about our wellbeing and how we can live a healthy lifestyle.

Year 1 and 2 Summer 1 Curriculum Information

 

In Summer 1, we will be exploring Magic Moments.  We will be reading many books – The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy, Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas, Pinocchio and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles these books are all about magic and excitement! We are always trying to include our school values in everything we do.  This term we will be to providing learning experiences in and out the classroom environment to improve our courage, teamwork, compassion and acceptance of each other and more …   

 

In the classroom we will be using these books to encourage the children to write information texts on writing instructions, recipes for potions and story writing too. We will also be talking about Great Britain and the places around it. Please talk to your child about the world around us, and maybe visit the public library together to borrow one of the books we are reading.

 

We love numbers and one of our aims is to continue learning about place value, addition and subtraction, we will also look at measuring in this term. In addition to this, we will be problem sloving and explaining together.  Can you ask your child simple questions about any of these titles ? Please use Times Tables Rockstars to encourage your child with their timestables.  They are set so the children can work on the 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s timestable.

Year 1 and 2 Spring 2 Curriculum Information

 

In Spring 2, we will be exploring Cats Vs Dogs.  We will be reading many books – Tabby McTat, The Detective Dog, Cat in the Hat, Can I be your Dog? and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles these books are all about adventures which animals have! We are always trying to include our school values in everything we do.  This term we will be trying to provide learning experiences in and out the classroom environment to improve our self-belief, honesty, confidence, teamwork and more …  We will also be going on a virtual trip to The Dogs Trust.

 

In the classroom we will be using these books to encourage the children to write information texts on cats and dogs, letter writing and advertisements too. We will also be talking Great Britain and the places around it. Please talk to your child about the world around us, and maybe visit the public library together to borrow one of the books we are reading.

 

We love numbers and one of our aims is to continue learning about addition and subtraction, we will also look at statistics, fractions and also measuring in this term.  Can you ask your child simple questions about any of these titles ? Please use ttrockstars to encourage your child with their timestables.  They are set so the children can work on the 2’s, 5’s and 10’s timestable. 

 

Our topic is called ‘Cats Vs Dogs’. This fits into our Science element of our topic as we are looking at animals and how they develop.  We will continue to use our observational skills to record the weather patterns. Throughout our learning in this topic, we will be trying to answer our Big Question which is:  What is the difference between cats and dogs?  In Art and Design Technology we aim to make dough models of cats and dogs and also make animal beds.  In R.E this term we are learning about Christians and what they believe. We will also be talking about our wellbeing in PSHCE.

Year 1 and 2 Spring 1 Curriculum Information

 

In Spring 1, we will be exploring the question ‘Where in the world?’.  We will be reading several books including Meerkat Mail, Snail and the Whale, Follow the Swallow and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles these books are all about adventures around the world! We are always trying to include our school values in everything we do.  This term we will be working in the classroom and in the outdoor environment to improve our self-belief, honesty, confidence, teamwork and more …  We will also be going on a virtual trip to a place of worship.

 

In the classroom we will be using these books to encourage the children to write a non-chronological report about animals, character description and we are also looking at stories and poems from other countries and cultures. We will also be talking about Africa and finding out where it is in the world. Please talk to your child about the world, Africa and maybe visit the public library together to borrow one of the books we are reading.

 

We love numbers and one of our aims is to learning about how we can divide and multiply numbers, we will also look at statistics, fractions and also measuring in this term.  Can you ask your child simple questions about any of these titles ? Please use ttrockstars to encourage your child with their timestables.  They are set so the children can work on the 2’s, 5’s and 10’s timestable. 

 

Our topic is called ‘Where in the world?’. This fits into our Geography element of our topic as we are looking at locations and naming the world seven continents and five oceans.  We will be using observational skills to record the weather patterns. Throughout our learning in this topic, we will be trying to answer our Big Question which is:  What is Africa like?  In Art and Design Technology we aim to paint African sunsets with silhouettes. We are also researching into significant people, and the lives they have lived.  In R.E this term we are learning about places of worship and talking about celebrations. We will also be talking about how to stay safe in PSHCE.

Year 1 and 2 Autumn 2 Curriculum Information

 

In Autumn 2, we will be going ‘Into the Woods’.  We will be reading several books including Little Red Reading Hood, The Enchanted Wood, The Gruffalo, Into the Forest and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles these books are all about adventures!  We will also be going on a Gruffalo hunt in our outdoor area and making animal homes.

 

In the classroom we will be using these books to encourage the children to write about a descriptive setting, write rules for the forest and retell and write the story of Little Red Reading Hood. We will also be talking about what the woods look like and what type of animals live in the woods.

 

Please talk to your children about nocturnal animals, living things and maybe visit the public library together to borrow one of the books we are reading. Throughout the curriculum areas, are our school values which we thread into each session.  This term we are looking at respect, honestly, compassion and many more.

 

We love numbers and one of our aims is to continue learning about how we can add and subtract numbers, we will also look at shapes all around us, money and also measuring in this term.  Can you ask your child simple questions about numbers? Please use ttrockstars to encourage your child with their timestables.  They are set so the children can work on the 2’s, 5’s and 10’s timestable. 

 

Our topic is called ‘Into the Woods’ and we will visit our outside area this term to investigate animal homes. This fits into our Geography element of our topic as we are looking at identifying outdoor areas and following a map.  We will be using simple compass directions, and our observational skills. Throughout our learning in this topic, we will be trying to answer our Big Question which is:  Where do animals live in the woods?  In Art and Design Technology we aim to do some Gruffalo cooking!! We also hope to understand where food comes from and the importance of healthy eating.

In R.E this term we are learning about the Jewish faith and talking about celebrations. We will also be talking about positive relationships.

Year 1 and 2 Autumn 1 Curriculum Information

 

In Autumn 1, we will be going into an imaginary world of Dragons and Dungeons.  We will be reading several books including Tell me a dragon, George and the dragon, The egg and many more.  As you can imagine from these titles these books are all about dragons!  We will also be going on a dragon egg hunt in our outdoor area.

 

In the classroom we will be using these books to encourage the children to write about dragons, we will also be talking about what the dragons look like and getting the children to explore different language we can use to describe them.  Please talk to your children about dragons and maybe visit the public library together?

 

We love numbers in year one and two.  Our aim is to continue learning about place value (ones,tens and hundreds) and how we can add and subtract numbers, we will also look at shapes all around us, money and also measuring in this first term.  Can you ask your child simple questions about numbers? What number do we live at? What number is on that blue door?

 

Our topic is all about castles and we would love to visit a local castle this term (Covid permitting) This fits into our History element of our topic as we are looking at local castles and their history.  Throughout our learning in this topic, we will be trying to answer our Big Question which is:  What were castles like?  In Art and Design Technology we aim to use clay to make a sculpted Dragons eyes, we can’t wait to do this!

Another area we are learning about this term, is how we should care for others and who cares for me.  We will talk about families and also celebrations we enjoy as a family.
