French at The Grove Primary School 

Here at the Grove, we use the Kapow Primary scheme to teach French across Key Stage 2. This programme is designed to build children’s confidence and enjoyment in learning a modern foreign language. 

What children learn 

Through Kapow French, pupils develop skills in: 

  • Speaking and listening  

  • Reading and writing  

  • Grammar and sentence building  

  • Pronunciation and vocabulary  

Topics are engaging and age-appropriate, including: 

  • Greetings and introductions  

  • Numbers, colours and classroom objects  

  • Family and friends  

  • Food and drink  

  • School life and hobbies  

How learning progresses 

The Kapow scheme ensures a clear progression from Year 3 to Year 6: 

  • Year 3: Basic words, phrases and simple conversations  

  • Year 4: Expanding vocabulary and forming short sentences  

  • Year 5: Developing grammar and conversational skills  

  • Year 6: Building confidence in speaking, reading and writing longer texts  

How we teach French 

Lessons are interactive and include: 

  • Songs, games and role play  

  • Speaking and listening activities  

  • Visual and written tasks  

  • Cultural learning about French-speaking countries  

How parents can help at home 

You can support your child by: 

  • Practising key vocabulary together  

  • Encouraging them to speak French aloud  

  • Using apps or videos to hear native pronunciation  

  • Asking them to teach you what they’ve learned
