- History of Melton Grove Missionary Baptist Church -

Over 116 years ago a group of many trustworthy, spirit filled men and women began to worship God in a rather small house, soon to become their first church, The Colored Baptist Church. As the membership in this church began to grow and prosper, a larger church was needed. At this time, Rev. Melton, took it upon himself along with the assistance of others members of this church to build a much larger church. The property in which this church was built was sold to the following Deacons of the Colored Baptist Church: Thao Nixon; Aug White and Baccus Haskins by Ms. Francis Nixon for the sum amount of $1.00 on February 18, 1882. This property was located in Perquimans County, a part of the Martin Track running near a main road, known only as "Henry Road". As praises continued to go up, so many blessing came down upon this church and it's church family. Since Rev. Melton was the founder of this church, it was therefore named in his honor.

The following brothers have led this church as Pastors, with each one of them contributing so much of their wisdom towards it's success and spiritual progress; Reverends Tom Waff, M. Billups, Rev. James, Rev. W.H.A. Stallings, at which time the church was moved to it present location. Of special note, there is a cornerstone at the back of the church with an inscription which reads Melton's Grove, B.C., October 13, 1911., Rev. Mebane, Rev. Newsome, C.L. Griffin, W.H. Davis, in which under his leadership, many church improvements were made, A.J. Cherry and Rev. J.W. Law, in which under his leadership our educational building was renovated becoming a valuable asset to our youth in providing wholesome and worthwhile recreation.

The Deacons that have served and continue to serve our church so proudly are listed as follows: William Sutton, Major Sawyer, Gus White, Joe Nixon, Mac Towe, Hasiah Overton; Stephen Key, J.E. At this present time, we are truly blessed to have Rev. Alvin J. Boone, Sr., as our Pastor. He is a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, an extraordinary man, a distinguished minister and leader who is genuinely concerned about not only the welfare of the church but the entire membership as well. While under his leadership, there have been many improvements and accomplishments in our church, to name a few: Worship services are held four Sundays per month, Youth Choir, Combine Choir, Inspirational Choir and Male Usher Board has been formed. Our church has been renovated with a new roof and vinyl siding, a Fellowship Hall addition and the entire left side of the parking lot has been paved. Another added blessing was received on April 23, 1996 when Ms. Dorothy Read, Marjory Brodie along with her husband Robert Brodie III of Wilmington, NC granted to our Church an additional one forth acre of land in the sum amount of $1.00. Therefore, we can truly say not only on today but in the years passed, Melton Grove Missionary Baptist Church has truly been blessed.

Our Church Motto is

" Anyway You Bless Us Lord, We Will Be Satisfied"
